Calling all Physics majors ?
Re: Physics of drop testing in laboratory conditions. Physics I was a long time ago – is dropping an object on a load cell, assuming software that can read fast enough to give good values, a valid means of conducting a drop test? Does the reading on the load cell accurately represent force exerted on the object? I suspect not, since F=ma and they are both constant – however, if I jumped on a proper scale from 5 feet I bet it would spike pretty high as opposed to if I was standing on it. If so, what does the reading represent, if anything? And what value should you be looking for? I’m thinking work or energy would be more relevant, but don’t know how the measurement would tie in. Basically, I’m trying to find out if there’s any way of connecting a simple force measurement with a freefall problem, but suspect they’re apples and oranges.
It is valid if you drop from rest as the only force acting on the object is gravity and you do not have an additional velocity or force acting on the load cell. By providing an additional velocity and acceleration from jumping you alter the load cell’s result because you have added extra acceleration to the force and momentum which will contribute to the force measured upon impact.
